Most people look at wellness issues in a piecemeal manner.
They only address healthcare issues one at a time. If you have high cholesterol, for example, you might try to do something about that by changing your diet or taking anti-cholesterol medication.
If you have little endurance or are overweight, you might want to jog a little bit more as a way to lose some weight and get in shape. If God forbid you have an acute health problem, you will want to go see a doctor to take care of it. Health care issues, in other words, are handled one after the other as they crop up.
I have always been a fan, however, of taking a more holistic look at health. As a dietitian and exercise fanatic, I know a lot about preventative care for health issues. Staying healthy is one of the most important things you can do.
It’s like that old saying: if you don’t have your health, you don’t have anything. Unfortunately, really taking care of your body and mind requires constant attention. It is really more of a lifestyle decision that practice. Read the rest of this entry
You may hear that there are many things that you can do to help you feel better and live longer.
Some are great and some are up for question. One thing that some question would be detoxing your body, but you don’t have to skip this if you do not wish to. There is something to be said for getting some of the everyday toxins out of your body. What you have to do is to be careful that you are doing something safe rather than something extreme that can hurt your health rather than help it.
The colon cleanse is one thing that may do when they think about detoxing your body naturally. The problem with this can be that you do it too often. Though this does help flatten the stomach a bit, that does not last very long.
The problem in detoxing your body with colon cleansing is that you can flush out the things that you need to have in your digestive system. There are special bacteria that help in digestion that colon cleansing is going to wash out. Without those, your system is not going to work well, and you may have a lot of problems. Use this sparingly. Read the rest of this entry
The fall is the season that I see very little of my husband. He is an avid hunter. He archery hunts for white tail deer. The archery season opens in mid September. He hunts for ducks and geese, that season opens the end of September.
He hunts pheasant that season opens the middle of October and he hunts deer with a rifle in November. Most of the weekend days during this time are filled with hunting trips. Most of the time he is home in the evenings, but a few of his trips are overnights.
When he is gone on overnight trips I usually get together with the wives of whom ever he is hunting with. When he is rifle hunting in November I get together with my sister-in-law. Each year we spend this weekend making some sort of Christmas craft item.
The last two years we have made a Christmas bead ornament. We learned the beading techniques in a community education class. The beaded Christmas ornaments are fun to make and they look very nice on the Christmas tree.
The church my husband and I belong to has a bake and craft sale each year in December. I thought this year I would donate a beaded Christmas ornament as my craft item and decorated sugar cookies as my baked item. This year my husband and his brother were going to take a few extra days hunting, so my sister-in-law and I decided that we would lengthen our weekend together also.
She came to my house after work on Friday. We set up our beads and started, making the ornaments. We have done them often enough that we each completed a beaded Christmas ornaments that night. We had the supplies for more so we agreed that we would compete more the next day and would donate them to the church sale.
We spent Saturday morning shopping and then had lunch together and shopped some more. Our other sister-in-law called us and we met for happy hour late in the afternoon. After a few drinks we went home and started to make the beaded Christmas ornament for the church sale.
We were laughing and having fun as we beaded. We also had a few more drinks. We laughed when we looked at the ornaments the next morning. The beads were not straight and the Styrofoam form underneath was showing.
We had to spend over an hour trying to repair the ornaments so we could donate them. We both agreed that we should not drink and try to bead ornaments at the same time. We will try less complicated crafts when we are having a few drinks.

Up until recently, people really did not seem to have a good idea about what causes obesity.
Basically, they felt like the sole causes of obesity were overeating and lack of exercise. In one sense this is true. If you are obese and switch to a healthy diet and exercise enough, you will probably lose weight.
In another sense, however, the factors that cause obesity are much more complex. Obesity is a combination of lifestyle, genetic factors, environmental conditions, and psychology. Individually, none of these factors cause obesity.
When all combined, however, the whole picture starts to emerge.
Although the research into what causes obesity has not been completely fruitful, it has produced some interesting new techniques for fighting the condition. We know a lot more about human digestive processes, the processing of calories, and the distribution of weight than we used to it. Read the rest of this entry
